Foreword
Tsuen Wan has so much to explore that we have decided to dedicate one more issue of LIFE+ to it. Among the latest happenings in this vibrant district is the long- awaited reopening of Nina Park, a museum-grade urban park that showcases Asia’s largest collection of wood fossils. Since its opening last December, the edutainment garden has attracted an impressive footfall of over 150,000 visitors in the first two months. Witnessing visitors’ enjoyment of the Park in their own unique ways has brought immense satisfaction to me. Yes, Nina Park is primarily a theme park of wood fossils, but the space is open to individual interpretation. Here, the elderly find pleasure in their morning walk, children gleefully splash through puddles formed by collected rainwater, and office workers seek tranquillity during their lunch breaks. Creating fresh cultural content for Hong Kong
A sunny afternoon, saw the high-profile businessman and former Executive Council convenor, Bernard Chan visit one of Hong Kong’s newest cultural destinations, Nina Park, for the first time. Accompanied by Chinachem Group Executive Director and CEO, Donald Choi, and the park curator, Dr Chan Lai Kiu, they spent a couple of hours in the park and its Wood Fossil Experience Centre, finishing their tour in the shade of the amphitheatre, discussing the future for cultural development in Hong Kong. Interesting history of Tsuen Wan
Tsuen Wan has a history dating back hundreds of years but is today a thriving new town with a population of over 300,000, often called the “City in the Sky” because of its extensive overhead walkways connecting two MTR stations and other parts of the district. It is also home to Nina Tower, the sixth tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, and Nina Park, a newly opened wood fossil park for local and tourists. Tsuen Wan is a true melting pot of new and old developments, with a rich heritage and culture.

In conversation with architecture masters
 
Recently, Chinachem brought an illustrious panel of international architects and engineers together to judge the Nina Park Design Competition. The contest was an opportunity for full-time students studying design-related disciplines in Hong Kong and Macau, to design a ‘Pavilion For All’ to be situated in the new wood fossil park created by Chinachem Group in Tsuen Wan West. Pushing design boundaries, and with sustainability top of mind, it encouraged the entrants to “rethink the conventional function of shelter, explore and present experimental ideas, and suggest placemaking interventions and innovative design solutions”.

Upcycling light bulbs and school uniforms
 
Ants and Chinese Checkers made from used light bulbs, landscape patchwork created with discarded CDs and light tubes – these are among the exhibits produced by Dr Chan Lai-kiu, affectionately known as Q, for the acclaimed “Wish to be – Renaissance of Used Lights” upcycled art exhibition that she curated years ago at Nina Mall. Recently awarded the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Special Award (Architectural Installation, Curation & Exhibition Design) for her sustainability efforts, Q shares that her know-how about transforming used items into artworks date from her childhood. “My mum was a new immigrant. She undertook freelance sewing jobs at home to help the family make ends meet. With fabric scraps from her work, I found sheer joy in crafting outfits for my dolls.”

Useless could be useful
Effective from 1 August, the Municipal Solid Waste Charging Scheme will be implemented to encourage residents to reduce waste, so as to alleviate the pressure on soon-to-be-saturated landfills, and avoid turning Hong Kong into a “garbage city”. Food waste accounts for a large part of household waste. As long as it’s handled properly, we can substantially reduce waste and expenses, while also maintaining a more liveable environment for the next generation.

Performance in the community
 
Cultural activities, such as theatre, dance, art, and opera, are often accused of being distant and elitist. Generally hosted in grand institutions or ticketed, high-priced venues, they very often fail to connect with anyone beyond a small group of enthusiasts and connoisseurs.

Performing artists: Stars born to shine
Watching Enjoy Yourself Tonight, a long-running variety show in Hong Kong, with family after dinner was a household phenomenon in the last century. While this undeniably remains one of the most cherished collective memories of the local community, the fun-filled content had brightened the daily lives of many, including Perrie Lai. “As a child, I perceived it as a playground brimming with happiness, and I was inspired to be part of it,” she fondly recounts.

Dining tables that bring hearts together
 
The dining table is where both the body and soul are fed and nourished. Chef Alan, with over 20 years of experience of cooking, has borne witness to a broad spectrum of emotions that unfolds around the table, saying, “Young people tend to order expensive dishes like lobsters, abalone for their parents, thinking that the feast would bring them joy. Yet, the elders may have trouble swallowing such food, and what they truly care about is the company, their loved ones. Unfortunately, they often keep these thoughts to themselves, leading to potential conflicts.”

Happy soccer for all
 
How far would you go for your family? Sherry Cheung, a soft-spoken and fair-skinned lady who had known nothing about soccer, established the Hong Kong Youth Soccer Academy solely out of her love for her soccer-fan son, Ian. This endeavour gradually evolved into an aspiration to serve the underprivileged, providing children with special needs the opportunities to enjoy themselves on the field.

The dining room of the 124-year-old Kowloon Bowling Green Club was empty and silent as LIFE+ sat down recently to chat with Dr Edward Leung. Picture perfect Gunners, ordered by the doctor, sparkled in their tankards atop the white linen tablecloth, as business cards were exchanged.
