Breathing sustainable life back into rural Hong Kong
Seven villages, set in the lush green landscape of the northeastern New Territories, form a unique community known as the Hing Chun Alliance. The centerpiece of this remote locale is the walled village of Lai Chi Wo, one of Hong Kong’s best preserved Hakka villages. Virtually deserted after its adult population chose migration over subsistence farming in the 1950s and 60s, it has in the last decade seen a resurgence of interest from HongKongers keen to connect with their city’s roots, nature, and the gentler pace of life experienced in this rural destination. These days Lai Chi Wo and neighbouring Mui Tsz Lam have become models for the other villages in the network to look to for inspiration regarding revitalisation.
