Kelvin Kam Interview
"The day Chinachem offered me a job 24 years ago, I had to go home and ask my parents what property management was. I didn’t imagine for a minute that I’d find the career I now have back then, but the company encouraged me to study, learn, and build a profession that I’m proud of.
I’ve seen such a lot of change in Chinachem in that time. They recognise that everyone needs to change, and the company has always encouraged progression and career development for me. During my time I got my first degree at CTU, and then I did my Masters in housing management at HKU.
These days what we do in property services has become much more complex and technical. We’re a highly people oriented industry, but IoT and property tech are becoming increasingly important. For example, we are already using robots to undertake cleaning tasks in our malls. You also find it becoming more visible in our way-finding and concierge services - technology is making our shoppers lives easier. That's why being with a company that is innovative is really important to me.
One thing I’d like to change though, is the image of the industry, property services. It’s hard for us to attract younger talent as they have the wrong impression of the business. It’s a service industry, and that relies on hiring great people. What people don’t know is that it can offer great prospects to people who are friendly and who have a broad range of skills."
