    In their journeys through university, Carly and Jasmine, who studied the human mind and animal welfare respectively, traversed distinct paths until a shared passion for the Earth’s well-being brought them together two years ago.

    The profound impact of environmental issues became apparent to Carly, a psychology graduate of Lingnan University, during a service trip to Uganda organised by her alma mater on her graduation year. Upon returning to Hong Kong, her thirst to delve deeper into climate change led her not only to pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Science at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, but also to engage in Climate Advocacy Training for Youth (CATY) organised by CarbonCare InnoLab. It was during this programme that she found a kindred spirit in Jasmine, a conservation biology graduate from the University of Exeter.

    “CATY reinforces a powerful message: Being young doesn’t mean we can’t effect change,” Jasmine recalled.

    This year, the young ladies, who are in their 20s, reunite at CATY, assuming new roles as mentors to guide younger participants. Both are deeply impressed by the creativity and vitality of their mentees. Carly remarked, “Gen Z is different! They are full of fresh ideas, among which the good thoughts can be quickly turned to action. That’s why youth involvement in environmental action is crucial.”

    Intergenerational collaboration becomes the key in propelling successful transformation and fostering an inclusive society. On 13 November, the duo was invited to speak as youth representatives at Chinachem Group Sustainability Conference.

    Jasmine shared "Lately, I’ve been particularly interested in the issue of climate justice. Underdeveloped nations often bear the brunt of the worst consequences of climate change. It’s an intricate ongoing negotiation.

    Carly, who had joined the Conference of Parties (COP27) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change last year as youth representative on CATY’s nomination, shared her experiences at Chinachem Group Sustainability Conference. She also provided insights on aligning local policies with the themes of COP28 which she will attend with Jasmine. Currently, she is compiling a toolkit to share her COP experiences and observations with her local peers, saying, “In addition to participating in global discussions, our generation must consider how to take more local actions.”

    Beyond their tireless work at environmental organisations, Jasmine is a member of Hong Kong Youth for Climate Action, while Carly serves on the United Nations Asia-Pacific Youth Advisory Group. When asked about their responses to frequent climate disasters, they both admitted to experiencing anxiety. “Many people aspire to change the world. Passion and courage are needed indeed, but actions in time are what eventually push things forward,” exclaimed Jasmine.
