Following extensive revitalisation, Central Market is ready to swing open its doors again in late August. Over its 160-year history, the building has gone through several transformations. The structure standing today was built in 1939. A Grade-III historical building, the four-storey market is a manifestation of the Streamline Moderne Bauhaus style of architecture. This treasured landmark, revitalised by the Urban Renewal Authority and Chinachem Group, will be a “Playground for All”, embodying the historic charm of the original with a new spirit. The addition of versatile, interactive designs promises an approachable, energetic and gregarious “21st Century Marketplace”.
